I've only got a couple of days left before I start work, and with no far in mind to go, I've not got much to do except get myself ready.
But that doesn't mean I can't do a little exploring. I did so this morning looking for my nearby post office. Five minutes walk away, and I learned something new about Japan today - post offices don't run services during the weekend at all. However once again I found something I wasn't looking for at all - a supermarket that is not only bigger than the one I have been using, but has a wider selection of produce, more cooking supplies on sale, and even a drug store section (it's also closer but only by about 2 minutes, every little counts). And finding it was just in time, since I had no food left for a decent meal at the apartment, so a good shop was in order. I then had a bit of time to kill and while I was out, I hit a nearby arcade for a bit. Didn't reach any high score but discovered some new games and was able to procrastinate a bit.
I then headed back to the apartment and after a quick lunch started trying to remember all the Japanese I had learned while at University. This is a very large amount of information. Japanese is easily one of the most complicated languages on earth: when I first started learning I was very tempted to drop out. But what I always say is that If you want to learn something and are genuinely interested in it, it is very easy to learn a subject, and after passing over the basic stuff I knew by heart, all the old knowledge came back and the dusty cogs began to turn in my head again. Of course the trick is that now I need to put that information to work by trying to formulate an introduction in Japanese - not easy to do considering I'm not actually certain what they're asking for.
I did have some success whilst cooking supper and was able to make a good, passable gyu-don meal for one. Not bad for an amateur.
